Yep as Whisky says - no need to tie off the two ends. You tie one end of the string material to one post when you start, tie the other end to the other post when you finish so that the ends cross over. Serve the end loop then simply cut off the extra bits of the two ends and finish the shank of the end loop.

The archer's reference has some basic diagrams on what the process looks like, but it sounds like you're pretty much sorted. Well done!
