Oh no no no... it's far older than that. It dates back to the *early* days. Usenet newsgroups and stuff. People trying to communicate over 9k (or less!) modem connections. It was a *really good* idea to keep the character count down, under those circumstances and not just a convenience. That's why most of the oldest ones are stock phrases like "If I Recall Correctly" and "As Far As I Know" - shorthand to keep the cost of communications down.
