having read a little bit around this i know ratty is shooting the asiatic bow in the tradtional way many texts describe but watching video of people like kassai (who obviously knows his stuff) shoot they DO shoot off the fingers and with a modern recurve style draw (at least some of the time)
i guess its a bit like the debate between victorian style longbow shooters (some of whom even use - gasp - platform tabs ! ) and the warbow purists
bottom line - whatever works for you i guess unless youre really into the historical accuracy / reenactment side of things
me ? - ill carry on shooting my little mongo with the thumbring when i feel up to it but mostly with a mutant recurve draw since thats what works best for me right now
