The eye can only focus acutely at one distance, so if it is focusing on the dot/circle on the lens 30 inches (ish) away, the gold will be unfocused. Vice Versa applies. I was taught that switching focus between the two was bad. The opinion then was to focus on the lens ring, placing it around the gold.

As for clarity I seem to recall from physics lessons at school that a single lens only has one focal length, at which everything is in focus ?
