I would say it can be done, but.... not very easy to do properly. The problem I had was, getting the string separated into two bunches of complete strands.
I have tried, using a blunt wedge. The tendency was for one or more of the strands to end up split, with some fibres either side of the wedge. Perhaps I just used the wrong shaped wedge. There is probably a simpler and more effective way, and I will be all ears when that is posted.
