From what I've heard/seen following the growth ring isn't an absolute must, but it gives you a better chance of not having a bow that explodes! Anyway - good job on making this one, hope it holds up for you, what wood did you use for the bow? (I feel as if I should recognise it, but I can't really think what it is?)

Its ash disguised with rosewood wood dye and finished with Danish Oil. The handle is still not finished but i've run out of inspiration for now. I rushed the finish so its not as shiny as i would have liked.
