Many years ago back in the mists (fog) of time I seem to recall, we used to record ten as an X X987654321 and a dash (-) for a miss!
This was in the days before they rejigged the standard target face to have the extra ring in the center and before compound 10s were even thought of.
Surely the obvious answers are (a) make the little box bigger or (b) dont put individual boxes for arrows, just have one box for the end. Personally I prefer (b) as the one arrow one box method really gets messy if you record incorrectly and the

has to find rook for the correct score and his/her initials
