did a demonstration at a corporate day once. recurve compound, then the longbow. no bracer with any. now the 65lb longbow with fastflight string. ouchy what a damn mess that was.lol

I think that the advice you were given was good advice. For elfin safety if nothing else... Coach has a "duty of care" towards people they work with... What you do with the advice is up to you, of course.
Then you go on and tell us about getting whacked by the string on your 65# longbow... 'nuff said.
I tell my leaders / coach trainees, always demonstrate best practice. Wearing a bracer is best practice.
