As most beginners come into archery via the recurve route I would guess that the sale of beginners recurve bows is high with very few beginners choosing to buy compound equipment. This would also explain why there is a heavier weighting of recurve archers by % at club level tournaments.
This doesnt account for the 80% of beginners who buy equipment (as you say, usually recurve) and dont see the year out.
Perhaps someone could trawl tournament results published on the internet by those clubs who publish them. That would give a good nationwide sample of active archers. Granted it wouldnt include the "social and casual" archers, but who cares about them anyway?
