Question Sight pin with or without circle

Mmmmm.... Another of those beginner's questions.

I have started shooting with a pin sight [field shooting like] and then when I got my first recourve sight it came with the standard circle with vertical pin inside. My trainer advised me to take the vertical pin away and I was left with only the round to aim with.

Never liked it so I got a 8/32 screw and ciselled a pin out of it. Slightly easier to aim but the score has gone down

Is there something I am missing? I have read somewhere about the subconscious playing a part in the aiming and the fact that we are instinctively good ad working with concentric circles.

I am now considering getting another pin, I was looking at the Cartel Square Open Pin.

Opinions? Advice?
