I cannot tell you what to do. But I can say what works for me:
a) clear with red inserts but I guess the black one might work as well;
b) I cut the core from the #2 red that came standard with the pin. Eventually I will try the frame inserts kit Beiter released recently;
c) mine is 8mm and works fine at all distances; the outer rings are hidden though. The aforementioned frame inserts could make the choice of the 12mm one easier as one can easily reduce the aperture to suit herself.
As usual YMMV.
