Question Fita field target faces/backing

What is the best backing material for target faces for field? We plan to leave our target faces on the bosses so the course can be shot on arrival with minimum delay. I am talking about FITA field target faces. Are there plastic/waterproof faces available? Any suggestions most welcome

Maybe not a "target face"/backing (so the code doesn't matter), but have you considered a small plastic "tilt" attached to the top of the target boss to shield the target face from the worst of the weather?

It does seem to work. We used to cover our targets with plastic sheet, which meant covering/uncovering. By putting a "little roof over their heads" (I think it was an Indy-idea, but not totally sure about that) we can turn up and shoot the permanent course with no problems.

thank you rads, bkupris if your bosses are in a sheltered wood and are the foam strip type then a tilt on top which hangs over about 12" should keep the worst of the wet off, its not that often rain will dampen the face unless its blowing a real gale and its getting blown about in all directions, however if you are in an open field,it might still work, i used a plastic sheet cut into lengths, very much like the stuff you see on for sale signs outside houses for sale, then just screw a batten round the top to secure it. it seems to work for our club and like rads says,no walking round the course to uncover everything first.

Yeah we thought of the "roof" idea and we might just do that. Most of the targets are in the woods and fairly well sheltered although a few will be exposed to the wet windy stuff we get here. We plan on the layered foam bosses and from what I have seen most folk just use cardboard for target face backing ?

Yes, but I think the faces get put out the night before/early on the morning of the shoot, not left permanently.

We leave ours out permanently. Normal cardboard, targets pasted on them. Bosses are th rubber strip type. With the "plastic roof" it works fine.

broadland bowmen is an nfas and efaa registered club, we leave our efaa faces on the targets (butts) from the day there is an official shoot, hunter, field, etr, so they remain on the course till the next month or when ever the next official efaa shoot is next, with the tilts on top they do keep dry unless like i stated earliar there is a real blowy gale, however they soon dry out again. bkupris as your course is in a wood you would be ok and they should stay dry, saves all that walking round first to uncover,

Wow - that's really good to know.

On a slight aside, does anyone know of a source for the foam/rubber strip to make up these type of butt?

hiya richardh, would not mind finding that one out myself, it would certainly save our club a few pennies as the frames are a doddle to make, and we have at least 3 of the binding devices, one or our members usually takes apart some of the shot out ones and reuses the better bits to beef up another one,

Yes, we too have access to a couple of binding machines. If I find anything out, I'll make sure I post the info!
