new to field NFAS what equipment is allowed for barebow?

I normally shoot target archery, but have just decided to try my hand at field.

I have an old border 62" one peice recurve bow. It does not have a sight but does have a sighting window (I think this is what it is called, the scolloped out bit where the arrow fits) and the arrow currently rests on a plastic hoyt, stick on rest.

Is this allowed for field?

With this equipment level, would it be considered as barebow? because I understand there are all sorts of rules as to what is and isn't allowed.

It will depend on what arrows you use.

If you shoot wooden arrows with feather fletchings, then it'll be Hunting Tackle (HT).

If the arrows aren't wooden, then it's Barebow.

Other than that, it's legal - you can shoot of an arrow- rest or off the shelf, it doesn't matter.

I think the only other thing that will make a difference will be that HT requires "Mediterranean Loose", so one finger above the arrow and 2 below. Not sure if 3-fingers below is ok for Barebow (I shoot HT)

Have a look here:

HT: NFAS (National Field Archery Society) - shooting styles

BareBow: NFAS (National Field Archery Society) - shooting styles

or on the wider NFAS (National Field Archery Society) - shooting styles for all styles in one place.

Thanks Raedwald that helps alot. Wow theres alot of classifications!

What is "...face or string walking..."

I am used to anchoring one above two below so that shouldn't be a problem.

Not decided on arrows yet,the bow is only 26lbs and I tend to prefer carbons with such a light bow.

Facewalking and Stringwalking are moving the hand to a different part of the string/face ("walking") depending on the distance to the target. So, with a consistant anchor point, for example, by "stringwalking" you have the bow angled for the range (it tends to be done, I think, by "counting down the serving"). Maybe someone can explain it better?

But as you anchor with Mediterranian Loose then as long as your anchor point is consistant, then you're legal and it shouldn't be a problem.

As for arrows, I've not come across carbons shot from a recurve that often in Field, and it's tended to be in the Freestyle class (where anything goes, so longrod, sights, etc). Those shooting BB that I've come across tend to shoot ali rather than carbon (but that might just be them!).

The debate tends to be one of consistency - with wooden arrows there's always going to be differences between each one, with metal then you can be more certain that each one will behave as another, and they're likely to be straighter too!

It will come down to personal preference - me, for the moment I'll shoot HT, so wood&feather.

just add that if you decide to shoot barebow with the efaa then string walking i believe is allowed, however only one anchor point is allowed under nfas rules, med loose.

Link to NFAS Barebow regs NFAS (National Field Archery Society) - shooting styles. Only one anchor point is allowed. Face and string walking is allowed in IFAA, bit not NFAS.

Yes you can shoot this as barebow, the sight window is normal on all recurves bows(well, nearly all ) but you are not permitted to have anything on the bow that might be able to be used as a sighting aid, marks on string, blemishes on bow handle, bits of tape, etc.

And to make things even more confusing... If you shot your current rig with wood arrows w feathers in a GNAS field shoot you would be in the "recurve traditional" bowstyle and mediteranean loose only. Shoot carbons or allys with your Border and they will move you to barebow Sorry I appreciate you are talking about the NFAS though...

Also be aware of the following "The unbraced bow complete with accessories must be capable of passing through a hole or ring of 12.2cm inside diameter =or - 0.5mm." One of the new lads in our club got half way through the second day of the shoot and was told by the judge he shouldn't have been allowed in the class. He has a new Hoyt Eclipse. He is now trying to afford sights.
