Limb size choice.........

I'm trying to make some decisions on how to proceed with this sport of Field archery.
I have 3 bows, the first I bought after completing my training and its a Nice 25" CNC petron phoenix with rubberised finish and has matching sights etc, it came with 32# limbs giving me a 66" bow, pulling 32# at 28".

After using the Petron for quite a while (and finding it lacking in cast on the longer targets) I aquired a vintage Hoyt pro medalist. The limbs were knack....no good...so I imported a pair from the States. They made up a 68" bow pulling 39# at 28". (this is what I use at the moment)

I also have a AFB that pulls 35# at 28".

The problem is that I have a short draw length, so all these poundages are not really accurate. I am looking to increase the poundage very slightly to maybe 38/40# on the fingers at MY DRAW LENGTH which is about 26".

I had a problem getting the Hoyt limbs as they are discontinued and I havnt used the Phoenix much at all.

The question is, if I want to start using the phoenix, what length and pondage limbs should I be looking at, to achieve the desired pull.

Thanks for your imput

I've moved this to the field archery forum as you may get more specific advice here.

If I had a 26" draw length I would be looking for a bow no longer than 66", possibly shorter.

Well thanks for your reply's. as I am a very impatient person (arn't all men)

I have now sold the Petron, and will continue with the Hoyt until I find the new outfit (looking to Border Bows to help out)

So hopefully I will soon be sorted

With a 26" draw you could usefully go to a 60" recurve or even 58 without pinching, that ought to be a lot faster casting. Border Bows... yeah the way to go. Don't over bow yourself.

To directly answer your initial question you should be getting a 66 inch bow with limbs marked at 42lbs at 28, this will give you 38lbs at your draw length. I am assuming that when you say draw length you mean that and not arrow length which is typically a bit longer.

You can still pick up limbs that will fit the hoyt on ebay but they are few and far between. I would suggest looking at winstar II a really good intimediate riser and light for carrying round a coarse and any limb as long as it hasn't got wood in it carbon/glass and carbon/foam limbs are much faster than the old wood cores.

i would also think about changing your arrows carbon/alis and all carbon arrows will be faster than your aluminium ones

dont rule out wood cores.

There are some phenominal wood core limbs on the market (granted probably second hand market)

Really? I'm not sure that's strictly true...

Alan (user of pretty quick wood cored limbs)

I agree I actually have a pair of wood core border limbs and thought they were the best things ever, when I got them they were, but they are just not a patch on the newer wood free limbs.

In what way?

My wood cored limbs are infinitely better than my old carbon foam set, both in speed and stability.

I'm just curious as to why you think that 'foam is better than wood'.
