AFB with Carbons

Here's one to get the circulation going...
After deciding that I was hopeless at making (...and keeping) wooden arrows, I recently changed to shooting carbons from my Griffon with a lot more consistency, not to mention accuracy.
Taking into account the obvious limtations I'm subjecting myself to regarding accepted Field shooting styles, but also bearing in mind that my main motivation for taking up the Tradbow a couple of years ago was my introduction to the US bow hunting scene, I was wondering whether anyone else out there on the UK scene regularly shoots carbons from AFB and with what set-up?

hiya griffon, this subject caused a big stir on the nfas website forums regarding carbon arrows shot from a flatbow, although very popular in the states its not very big here that i know of at the moment, there are a few field archers who do shoot carbons from their flatbow and i suppose if you did shoot this way under the nfas ,is what class you would be labelled under, barebow is the only one i can think of. i have tried a couple of light alloys and carbon from my own flatbow,not my preferred style, (compound) and they did seem to come out ok,

My experience with the little bit of playing around with carbons and ally's is they shoot very nicely out of my flatbow. But as said, same for Fita field as NFAS use them and shoot with the barebow guys, good luck! LOL

Yep, I do!

I shoot a Horne Combo longbow, 63# at my draw. I shoot full length Beeman MFX 400s with 100gn brass HIT inserts & 200gn points. Total arrow weight is 660gn

These days I only shoot NFAS primitive class. All my longbow (flatbow ) shooting is done at animals, or practicing for hunting.

Life's too short to spend it faffing about with the inconsistencies of wood.

I think a lot folks panic about shooting carbon from traditional gear, usually they're worried about carbons being too light. There are quite a few carbon manufacturers making arrow shafts designed for trad gear & hunting. Beman, Carbon Express & Easton all make good, heavy (9-12 gn/inch) carbon shafts. With a little messing around with point & insert weight, it's quite easy to build 800gn carbons, quite safe for 90# longbows!
