All I meant was that he shows amazing attention to detail, almost to the point of being obsessive. It's not a bad thing, honest!!:

[QUOTE=English Bowman
By the way, I found one of your old arrows the other day, I'll send it up to you if you want, it's green, yellow, and blue.

I thought that subject was dead and buried in a shallow grave somewhere. Anyone is allowed a mistake!

Goldflight,

Thanks for the info- I still have a stash of good POC, but when that runs out I'm going to have to look for something else- between the hit and miss quality of new POC and that new US tax I'll be looking at European alternatives.

Any idea if mountain spruce is any good? And do you have any 9/32" 30# shafts available?

Thanks,

Jakes

Jakes,
I know that Chris Boyton produces 9/32 but they have to be ordered well in advance. He does runs of a particular diameter and these runs can last for several weeks.
As for the Mountain Spruce - to be honest I'm not sure, all I can say is that I get quite a few sales from previous Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir, Hexpine and POC users, that should tell you something.

Boyton Scots Pine Arrows

I just bought two dozen of Boyton Scots Pine Shafts from Goldflight this morning. The service is brilliant, really friendly and helpful. Arrows are spine matched to +/- 1lb of each other for the same price as per a regular dozen anywhere else, some places will charge you up to £8 for the privilege.

I paid for them at 10am, at 10.30 I recieved an email saying they would be in the post today ans should recieve them tomorrow.

I was a little disappointed to hear they are heavier than POC as I'm struggling to get to 80 yards with my current arrows.

We'll see what 70 grain points and 1.675" Dumpy feathers do for me.

Thumbs up

Goldflight's service is outstanding and their shafts are the only wooden ones I will buy now that I have discovered them. When Dennis says he will send you a matched set that is exactly what you will get. I used to buy four or five dozen POC shafts to get a loosely matched set and would number the best ones. Now I can buy a matched dozen and use them all. I bought another matched set a few months later and they were the same weight and spine as the last batch. Personally I like the little extra weight of the pine and because I can get them 45-50 I've returned to 5/16 shafts. These don't seem to break as easily as their POC equivalent and when they do the grain is so consistently straight I can splice in a footing and the repair is hard to spot. They are a few quid more than POC but way better value for money IMO.
Regarding the Hexshafts I have been trying the ones that survived the tapering process were very good. Most of them however got damaged using the standard pencil sharpener style taper tool - I could hear the glue cracking and lost torsional stiffness and spine weight as the laminations twisted and spiralled. The damaged ones did not stay straight for long and the undamaged ones are still true. Bareshaft tests easily confirmed which shafts were OK. After speaking with some US archers who love Hexshafts apparently they are best tapered using a power tool that grinds the taper with a sanding disk so as not to twist the laminations. Now that I'm using the Boyton shafts I can't see any benefit to the Hexshafts other than perhaps a bit more durability.

Boyton shafts.

I'm pleased that so many of you are discovering the quality of these shafts.
Regarding the price, POC prices increased recently and Quicks Archery increased theirs to £16.80 per dozen - exactly the same as Boytons. This makes them even better value. There might be a few dealers still charging the old price but this will only be whilst old stocks last.
It is true that I spine match, check grain and eye straighten every shaft at no extra cost. My theory is that although it takes time to do this, users will be much happier and return for more. This theory has proved correct as many of you are onto their 2nd, 3rd and 4th sets.
The shafts are a little heavier than POC but this is not always a bad thing. The extra weight aids stability and retains more residual downrange energy, both useful on windy days.

Dennis - Goldflight Archery.
