If compound interests you go for it. My dad was an Olympic recurver yet despite the prodding in that direction I just couldn't resist compound. For some people one will always strike a nerve over the other so do what you think looks good.
As for one being harder, well it's tough to win at the highest level no matter what you shoot.

The key no matter what you choose is learn to do it correctly straight away. How good you will be with a compound will be determined by how well you use your release aid. Learn to use it right now by sqeezing the trigger at a constant speed while holding the sight on the middle and not making the release fire and you will do very well. Starting punching or delibretly firing the trigger and you will end up developing major problems very quickly and limiting your potential.
Recurve archers have it easier here because you can't punch a clicker.
