First Long Rod for a Junior

My son (10 yrs old), is currently shooting a wooden 54" bow, pulling around 20lbs with a draw length of about 23". He's just achieved his first 2nd Class score in a Junior Windsor at the weekend, as a reward I've bought him a better sight than the crappy old one he's currently using (cheers Radar!)

He's now enquiring about whether he can use a long rod, to help his consistency and grouping, and as I happen to have a 30" Arten ally one knocking around the house doing nothing, would it be suitable for him to use this, or would it be too long for him?
