Ben, I agree with Haywain in that the one time you tried it, you went to the field shoot from hell. Course laying is a skill that most of us are proud to get right. We work on the course at our club for at least a couple of months leading up to a shoot.
The subject about shooting at animal targets? Field archery was originated by bowhunters practicing their skills. I think it would be hypocritical to say it is not simulated hunting and put roundell faces up. You can still have the spirit of the hunt without having a bloodlust. If you want to shoot at roundells, then shoot GNAS field. It's that simple.
Target archery isn't that innocent anyway. It's a simulated battlefied, and there isn't much difference between a straw boss and a Frenchman, both are pretty dense.
