Twisting and untwisting the cables is to get the cams into the correct positions relative to each other and to the manufacturer's specifications. When you twist or untwist one cable, any changes in the tensions, get spread out to the other cable as they are linked.The X cams are an exception as Quadratus said. That's because each of the two cables is made as a pair, one string for each side.
