I was going to just let it be but reading WM words above I feel I should respond.

As the person most likely to have responded to HB's post and the recipient of two posts of abuse, one now deleted but I have copies for sale on ebay - NOT I agree that by locking the thread and taking it out of context suggests that the other party was the poster that kicked it all off and this was his right of reply, it also stopped my public right of reply to set the record straight.

All I can say is read the thread on LP's duties and make your own mind up. I have again and my response has not been moderated or deleted.

Its only fair that you have the opportunity to reply to Horesbowman. As we know him through our club I am sure he would want you to be able to voice your opinion. He is straight talking but fair when it comes to hearing other peoples viewpoint - even though he may not agree

Life would be boring if we all agreed - very much water under the bridge now.

(need to say i havent read the threads in question)

as a mod elsewhere i dont necessarily agree with 'preemptive' locking etc - my preferred approach would be to post a warning in the thread about peoples actions with a 'carry on like this and youll be modded' comment tagged on to give people the chance to backtrack and make up as it were - the only things that get edited / dleted / locked without warning where i mod are posts that contravene UK law on racism / sexism / homophobia / etc and posts that openly promote illegal activities (its a music forum so its usually copyright or illegal software)

Personally I take a different approach, if it's an argument between individuals I delete 'aggro' posts and ask people to take it to private messages. That's what they're there for. The world doesn't need to see peoples arguments.

Bad feeling on public forums particularly community based ones is never good imo.

I have 2 takes
1) I feel sometimes good threads are locked too often on here. There are heaps of threads I get tired of and move away from. They don't need to be locked.
2) It's not my forum. The admin and mods run it they way they see fit. Feedback is good, but trust me, it's not an easy or simple job. It's quite stressful. I find it more stressful than my real job. So perhaps sometimes they have a good reason but they don't need to communicate that to you, as long as it doesn't turn into Archery Talk where if you critisize you are toasted.

I think sometimes people forget what this forum is. It's a community space which is run by volunteers; Dave, who started it, on whose server it runs and who has the ultimate say on the direction it takes; and the moderators who oversee the day-to-day progress. We aren't a corporation somewhere; we're spread all over the country and we don't have the facility to have a conference and reach a communal decision. We rely on the judgement of the mod who spots a problem, actual or potential, to make the right decision and generally speaking we mods do a pretty good job. I'm sure the same applies to Archery Forum which Marcus runs, and just about every other forum on the internet.

I think one thing we are all united on; we have all looked at Archery Talk and have a strong desire to make sure that AIUK does not become like that! A large part of AT consists of argument, insults and dissent. If a thread looks like descending to that level, it will be modded. Bad language will be modded - it may be a part of some people's normal speech but it offends others, and it must be remembered that we have junior members here too.

If there is one basic principle to observe, it is courtesy and respect for others. Some may find that boring; if so, maybe this is not the right forum for them.

I agree, people who bleat on about freedom of speech on forums really get on my ****. A forum is set up, generally paid for, and maintained by whoever runs it and the moderators they chose (generally none of whom get paid for doing so), it's up to them what does and doesn't get talked about on it. If you don't like what goes on at a given forum and want your freedom of speech then part of the joy of the internet is the ability to set up your own space where you can say whatever you want.

I don't see anything wrong with questioning the decisions of forum owners and moderators and I've been questioned myself on calls I've made on the forums I run before and often changed my opinion based on such questions... but it's only fair to respect and abide by the decisions they make when necessary.
