Sighters

Ok Forgive me as I am new, I am aware that you are allowed sighters at the beginning of a round, 6 or so arrows dependant on the round, what I am not sure of is are the sighters repeated at a change of distance, or is it 1 set only at the beginning? I can ask at the club but I thought I would throw it out here first.

Just want to get it right for shooting rounds towards the summer league.

Unfortunately, despite the desire of most archers to have more sighters at the distance changes, you only get the 6 arrows at the beginning of the day. If the round is a double all shot in one day, ie a double american, you will still only get the 6 arrows at the very beginning of the day.

I nearly slipped up when shooting a combined 25m & 18m indoor!! I almost pulled my arrows out at the start of the shorter distance

Life is not fair. Why is there this rule. It is neccessary to have a list of sight marks that you can trust, when you have to change distances. Headwinds and tailwinds as well as rain snow, sunshine, atmospheric pressure changes all have to be taken into account. But not all at the same time.

Dont forget that the sight marks you get on your club field are only a guide. When you get to the tournament field you will almost certainly find that they are different in both planes. Depending on your standard be prepared to adjust your sights after the first sighter. The nice thing is that if you have to move your normal sight mark down by 3mm at 90M you will also have to move it down by about the same at 70M and a bit less at 50m and 30M. I always record my sight marks shot at tournaments to give me a good 'average' sight mark.

As for sighters in general, many's the time I've shot 10's in sighters indoors and then shot an 8 or 9 or got on the gold outdoors and then missed!

I can see why people complain about this, I don't know of any other sport where you are limited on practice time. I could Just Imagine it now The Masters "I am afraid Mr Woods we have changed the rules you are only allowed 1 hole practice, 1 Drive 1 Chip and 1 Put". Maybe That is what happened to the guys in India this week, "OK guys only 6 Balls to practice in the nets then get out there".

On a philosophical point I guess everyone is in the same boat, that is where experience comes into it.

1 last question prompted by miss purple's Post, If you enter 2 separate Competitions or rounds whichever they are referred to on the same day (same venue), are you only allowed sighters before the first one? Because you can then be shooting the second comp against people who have entered this one only and are allowed them which would be a little unfair.

The competition referred to by Miss Purple is actually a recognised single round, a sort of western round indoors shot at over 2 distances. However, referring to your question about entering two competitions on a single day...

If you are shooting the same round with the same style then no sighters are permitted. Also your score for the first shoot will only be taken into account for the awards at the end of the day.

If you are shooting the same round but with a different style, ie changing bows from recurve to compound, then you are allowed a second set of sighters at the beginning of the next round.

In my experience, you will probably not come across this situation outdoors, as most competitions offer only 1 round per day except for events such as the Wiltshire Chamionship Weekend in Devizes where a clout and a 2 way longbow round are shot on the same day. With the drastic difference between rounds, sighters are an essential part of safety!

It is not unfair. Practise enough so that you have reliable sight marks and learn to judge what difference the wind makes. Its all part of the sport.

I don't have a problem with not being allowed sighters on distance change - as previously mentioned, this is something you should train for! My mistake at the indoor shoot was my inexperience of competitions and having nevr shot that round before! I did score a new PB that day
