Cool Record Status Shoot Very Early Season

I am at present looking into doing a record status shoot on the first weekend of April next year, with hopefully the chance of doing WRS shoots on following years. I personaly favour doing a double Fita 70 at this time of year but I was wondering what others would like to do given this opertunaty so early in the season. The shooting is quite sheltered from the north but quite open to southerlies so the worst of the weather can generaly be avoided.

Your help in this will be most appreiciated
Thanks Nick

Hants always do their selection shoot that weekend and it's usually a terrible score for all concerned - so as I prefer to try and prepare for the full season at that time of year and as I try to stop myself from entering too many comps anyway ... however some thoughts:

Personally nothing bores me so much as 'double 70m', I do them but not out of preference. Many like them as they're probably easier to get the good scores than than full FITA and can boost your national ranking on a sheltered ground, if WRS of course. I would have thought it's easier to run than a FITA. However, there's been a bit of proliferation of the FITA 70m (Southampton, Molesley) that will turn WRS in 2008 so the FITA would set you apart.

A FITA 900 or an Albion would be aiming at a different 'market', more club archers will be prepared to enter. They are often the appropriate shoot to choose, especially if it's an odd time of year that's less likely to attract archers from far flung corners and if you don't have great facilities to cater for large numbers. I've really enjoyed the FITA 900s I have done when compared to the imperial rounds, the FITA 900 is a great shoot to cover lots of ability ranges - bit short on arrows though, you can make up the fun with a full 45mins practice.

St george is an odd one, not likely to attract the good archers yet the club archers get put off by 100yrds. The only club I know who tried to run this didn't find it successful - the Windsor from the other local club was a far greater success.

A Nene Bowmen FITA Star sounds good Nick, or even a Northants FITA Star?

I'd do a Double 720 or FITA Star if it was on at that time of the year and the grounds were sheltered. You need only look at the Clophill FITA 4 and how early it fills up with people trying to get their final qualification scores in to know that it would be a success.
Double 720s are quicker than FITAs, so can start later in the day and finish earlier. They are also less work for the field party and judges and are not as wearing on targets as a full FITA (no soft centres afterward).
But, like moo-mop said, it's 12 dozen at the same distance. That's almost as bad as a double worcester!

If it's that time of year, you're praying for decent weather or it'll be a waste of time and money. On that basis, I'd rather have good weather for a FITA than a FITA70, just because a good FITA score means more to me than a FITA70. That said, I'm hardly competing for any national teams, so I think my logic probably doesn't apply to everyone.

I would definatly go to a Fita/Double Fita in April regardless of where in the country it would be.

The latest trend in shooting seems to be 720's. Fine, I have to do them at internationals, but don't really want to shoot them at home unless they have head to head's attached to them. Not only are they boring, they do not prove who is the best archer there, just who does'nt get bored the fastest.

I agree totally (apart from the internationals ).

I also have a soft spot for a Hereford too... but I can see that they are a dying round

Cool

Thanks so far for your comments
I take on bored what mop mop and grant have to say on the matter
and i agree about the Imperial and shorter metric rounds I love shooting fitas myself and a full fita is my favourite shoot I was thinking about the fita 70 because of the fact that if the weather is really bad you could still get half a day in.
I am lisening to what is being said and will go with the majority vote, please note that at present this is only at enquiry stage, but if I can go to my clubs commitee with sound facts it will help get this shoot on its way.
please keep the comments coming
Cheers Nick
