Fletches or Fletchings?

Borne out of a friendly argument in the bar a few weeks ago - those coloured things on the blunt end of your arrows - sometimes they're plastic, sometimes they're feather. Sometimes they're straight, sometimes they're curved. Other times they're brightly coloured and sometimes they're plain.

However, ALL the time they're fletches.... or are they fletchings?

You decide!

Definition of fletching from Wikipedia.

You might also try this from Webster or WordWeb

I say fletches...feather fletches, plastic fletches. Vanes I use less so unless it's a brand name like Duravanes.

Maybe fletchings is more a word for all kinds of fletches. But does it really matter?

Isn't "fletches" the third person singular, present tense, of the verb "to fletch".
However, that raises another question: does "to fletch" mean "to make arrows" or "to apply fletchings to an arrow"?
I just know I'm going regret this...

Vanes, just to be awkward.

Though of the choice given I would say fletchings.
