For the compound guys who make their own strings and cables - do you pre-stretch your strings? I use a Spig Jig with a crank on one end that allows you to really put the string under pressure before serving.

I hear the best one is the BCY jig but it costs a fortune and is only available from the USA, so I can imagine the shipping will be very steep.

I use an Arten with crossbow adapter to make the small floating yokes and the Spig for the longer strings and cables.

Dave or any MOD reading this could you please add an extra choice - 'Mixture of the above' to the poll as I reached the maximum number of options I was allowed.

I make and fit my own recurve and compound strings. It is not always easy but I can be 100% sure of the quality, materials and length I need.

I make strings for my bow as wells for the club bows and sometimes club members. I've bought strings from suppliers but have found them to be too long or too short. This way I can make them the length I want to give me 22/26 twists after they have settled in. I also find string making rather theraputic.

I have just started to make my own strings. I make bows and they don't always end up the exact length i was aiming for so its easier to make my own. Even if they are a bit amateurish at the mo. My "jig" consists of two planks with a nail in each and spacers between for the right length and my serving tool is an elastic band! Well you cant buy every thing at once! Adapt and overcome its more fun!!

During my first few years in compound archery, whatever strings i bought there was some problem or another with the way they were made (peep rotation and poor servings were the main culprits) i spent a pile of money on them for my wifes and my bows.

Some time later i started to buy custom strings from the USA and while these were much better on peep rotation the lengths weren`t always correct. Consequently i often had to put excessive twists in a cable or string to get the bows timed right, and on one occasion in one set the string was made too short to be usable and had to be replaced.

So because of all that i thought to get what i want it looks as though i`ll have to make them myself - i got a heavy duty jig made up and that is what i now do, make and re-serve strings & cables for myself and anybody else that needs them.

i make my own strings for my AFB, double ended flemmish twists, only made a few so far and enjoying learning the art, some have been too long and needed too many twists to get the bracing height right, some are too short, with more practice i think i'll be able to get it right, i don't use a jig of any kind just a hook on the wall ( is there a jig for the this? it would help to get them more uniform) as for the serving i hold it in place with a blob of beeswax rather than super glue, haven't had one unravel yet
