I think that's because it's an area where
GNAS actually have competition.
It would be interesting to find figures on (for example) the number of BLBS members compared to
GNAS/longbow...
On the other hand,
GNAS isn't likely to have any competition in the area of target archery. They are the governing body recognised by FITA/IOC, which makes it difficult for any other group to compete in that arena (since the IOC won't deal with more than one governing body, I'm told). It could be worse. IIRC the archery governing body in Germany is a general shooting sports one (rifle and pistol as well), archery is just a sub-section.
The FITA/IOC connection is
why GNAS considers itself important, because that's the direction Govt/media attention goes (such as there is). Unfortunately, it can let some pompous asses get hold of the wrong end of the stick - i.e. they think they have the attention because they are important, whereas, they are only important because they are where the attention is directed...
