Does you club use a computer for scoring and tournament admin? Does it own the computer and software or does a member loan the club theirs on the day? Do you use commercial software or your own?

I wrote an Access database, then bought a clapped out laptop to run it on. Miracle it runs at each tournament, but it does.
Sometimes I think the club would benefit from buying a PC, to cover membership, postals, tournaments (all of which are run at my home). But I doubt it would be cost-effective, and would be vulnerable if all these three functions split, as it would then have to be kept at the club.

Our club secretary is looking to buy a used one from his company when they come up for sale. I think it would have to be kept by an appointed person and named on the clubs insurance policy.

In the meantime our scoring and admin is run on archery_mum's laptop with our own software.

We dont use a computer for scoring at our club because Mrs Grimsby Archer can do straightforward scoring (picking top 3 from each category) in her head faster than any computer system.
A computer was used with an excel spread sheet (where do we get these people from?) at one of our shoots recently (Mrs Grimsby Archer wasnt available that day) and it got the results wrong (nothing to do with me)

I (nothing to do with my club) use my own pc and scoring software for the Lincs EMAS Double FITA Star (you knew that was coming didnt you) because Mrs Grimsby Archer can't do leader boards in her head.
This year we (Mrs GA and I) are doing the EMAS Champs and there are so many prizes with so many strange rules involved, the computer will be invaluable.
Having said it is my computer, I do charge rental on it (wear and tear on the printer etc) but I developed the software for free (saving of about £10,000)
Mrs GA keeps trying to convince me to buy a laptop, but I keep telling her, I dont need a laptop when she is there to lug the pc about and find somewhere to plug in my 100m extension cable.
For the double fita star, I'm not convinced a laptop battery would last long enough and I hate the laptop keyboards.
Still we did have an interesting moment last year when someone in the tennis club unplugged the cable "to see where it went"
When people like PCWorld are knocking good spec laptops out for under £350, whats not to have?

My next lottery grant application is going to have a high spec laptop on it for use with a digital video camera as part of a digital video coaching suite.

Its probably going to be a familiar response...

Take my own laptop down, mainly because the software was written by me.

we run 2 or 3 fairly small scale competitions each year - until the last one scoring was done pretty much by hand - for our last one in august i took my laptop down and a simple set of spreadsheets

i think im lumbered from now on ...
