Why not try field archery?

The Yorkshire Field Championships this coming Sunday have attracted a decent number of entries, but still a lot less than I'd have hoped. It's an ideal occasion for the first-time field archer, being a marked round on a pleasant, easily-walked course, yet the number of entrants is only about a third of the capacity.

So why don't more people try field? What's putting you off?

I'd love to, but I don;t have the transport to get to the right venues.

Aside from the climbing and the mountaineering involved ( depending on the course! ) i think something that would put a lot of people off is losing/breaking arrows. The material cost involved.

Its not forgiving if you fluff up a shot and put one off the target. In target they are going to hit the backstop netting/padding or just land in the grass behind the targets depending on the venue. In field they will get stuck in the ground, hit trees, smash to pieces on rocks and buried roots etc.. Killed a few and lost a few but that said, field archery is very addictive!

Its pretty much the only style i shoot. I have tried target but field appeals to me a lot more. I like being outside and wandering around the course, and the slopes and distance estimation all add to the fun. Need to get on the slopes and practice shooting at an angle more though. these days indoors i can nail the gold, soon as i go on the slopes im all over the shop but thats what is fun about it, the challenge!

i'll get on the rankings one day!

at the moment i'm limited to shoots at Pentref my local club, and ones in the area that i can blag a lift from club members to... but i'm learning to drive and as soon as i am i'll be all over the place. Intend to shoot as many comps as i can get to.

Due to lack of transport/accomodation, being between jobs and being in the wrong country, I wouldn't have a hope in hell of being able to get there, let alone to participate, but it would be awesome to have be able to enter next year, so long as it is being held on an annual basis

I would recommend Field Archery though, especially those who love traditional archery

I presume I'd need more/different kit.

I can't imagine dragging my bow around the woods with full stabs set-up etc., but don't much fancy shooting it without it.

Oh, and don't want to damage/lose arrows.

I'm mainly a target shooter, but I love shooting field. I use my full set up (longrod+v-bars) but as a consesion I do take the lens out of my sight. A cheap set of arrows and away I go!!

I've only shot unmarked big game/3D but woud love to give a FITA field round a go... alas Yorkshire on a week's notice isn't enough... oh well, there's always next year!!

So shoot XX75's or a cheap set of carbons. You have sight marks from your target don't you?? They translate fairly ok for the flatter field courses.

I'd love to try it, but Yorkshire this weekend - no chance. I'm still negotiating a pass out for ScoCo in July.
