Angry Travel Costs (ouch!)

Are the recent extortionate increases in the price of fuel going to hinder your participation in attending archery events that you would usually or want to attend?

I voted NO, but then I'm only doing "local" shoots - say within 1 hour of home.

At the moment this doesn't apply to me yet as I haven't gotten round to competeing yet, but I know that it will do in the future

For me, being able to enter as competitive shoot depends on 2 things...

1. It's location and how easy it is accessed via public transport, since I can't drive.

2. How much it will cost for me to get there, by various fares/expences before even getting to string my bow.

If there is someone in the local club that is going to the same club and lives nearby, then I would happily go 50/50 with the fuelk costs of getting to the shoot, it is only fair after all

I will say though, the amount of tax that we pay here in the UK, is beyond extortionate.

Willie

Yes but hopefully I am going to change the car very soon but the Espace at present gets 16mpg round town and just under 30mpg on the motorway, so if I am stuck with that even loal shoots become major exersions.

Not this year but it is something we will have to factor in for next year.

I think that car sharing will become more common for anything more than local shoots, especially amongst those in small social clubs.
But if I was the only one from our club going it wouldn't stop me. As shoot entries are so cheap compared to entry fees in other sports a days shooting is still good value.

This is a very valid thread if one is wanting to compete for a ranking position etc. For most archers, I would suggest that they will keep it local (county) and as such will not see them maxing their credit cards on petrol or accommodation costs. For those that are seeking the Holy Grail then yes, the costs of just getting to the shoots could prove troublesome. I drive a Ford Escort estate, 1400cc and I drive very carefully, mindfull of the way the petrol goes when doing a steady 70mph on a motorway. I've been travelling on business to and from the Midlands recently and a round trip to Tamworth costs £45 with the petrol (unleaded) costing 109p a litre. The round trip, which is pretty much direct, is 216 miles one way.So, 432 miles would cost me about £10 per hundred miles, more in a headwind. If one is wanting to chase scores, then from where I live Devon, petrol costs will play a major part. I've woeked it out that with time off from work, petrol, food, accommodation and any other odds and sodds, busted arrows etc, each shoot next yera will probably cost me £250 a weekend, and it is expected that I will have to attend at least two of these shoots in month.

I do think it is time for our county/regional associations to get their heads together and cater for those impending archers to help reduce costs. They probably do, but for me next year, to try and get a ranking, will have to spend much of the time outside of my GWAS region. But I'm probably one of only a few.

Old Bloke

I was thinking the same thing. I filled up my tank with diesel yesterday @ £1.17 per litre and thought my goodness I feel sorry for those squad archers that have to travel to several shoots each year
