Coaching - Would/Have you paid for Coaching?

Would you or have you paid for coaching?

This would include individual professional coaching, performance coaching, County organised coaching where you paid a fee or perhaps one of the GNAS Performance Courses at Lilleshall. In fact any kind of archery coaching where you paid to attend.

Did you think it was good value and did it help you?

If you haven't yet is it something you are thinking about?

myself and zoe have done one of the GNAS performance weekends

as it was our first experience of 'proper' coaching we both found it pretty useful and came away with a MUCH clearer idea of our issues and how to tackle them - even though the weekend is relatively expensive we both felt it was worth it as there was quite a lot packed into the 2 days

on the other hand - there is no structure 'above' these courses (ie - 'personal performance level 2' or whatever) for people who have done one and want some follow-up - the coaches who ran the weekend offered free follow-up coaching at their club (meriden) but finding mutually convenient times and the travel involved have so far got in the way of that

in terms of results so far - personally ive struggled with some of the things i need(ed) to change (mainly though lack of regular practice time) and scores have improved slightly but no hugely - it seems to have worked for zoe though - in the couple of months since we did the weekend she has gone from just about hitting 3rd class scores to getting her first 1st class score and she looks like she will beat me to first class over the next few weeks !

overall - if you dont have access to good and free local coaching (at club or regional level) then i dont have an issue with paying for it if youre serious about getting better - and i reckon 20 to 25 quid an hour (100 quid a day ?) would be a reasonable fee

I have been on one of the courses at Lilleshall. Interestingly the coaches there are NOT paid. The money is for the facilities and accommodation.

I think club level coaching (during club hours) should be free and available to all members

Very diverse question.

I think at a club level most decent clubs should be able to offer coaching up to an intermediate level, ie. Novice training plus decent followup.

Would I pay for a GNAS performance weekend. My dad did one of these back in the good old days and it got him a FITA star in the end. Would I get ANY course from GNAS claiming to be performance if it was anything other than free? Doubtful.

Would I pay for coaching, yes, but it would have to be seriously good coaching. At the moment I am lucky to know a coach who provides excellent provision, but who knows if I fork out £100 maybe the other coach will provide another yet unforseen perspective or else some psychological detail that will help me improve.

If I were trying to get coaching outside of club hours then I would expect to pay around £25 per hour. However, on club coaching days (I won't say during club hours otherwise the coaches will never get to shoot) I don't think it is right to be charging for coaching, or if you do it should be nominal.

I could have voted for five of the questions, but ticked paid for coaching as part of a group, as I've done this more often.
How much you are willing to spend on coaching depends to a large degree on how serious you take archery, I would pay £50/hour for top class tuition

OK, I voted other, for the following reasons:
  1. I receive some free coaching from our club coach, under an arrangement that he uses our coaching sessions as evidence/casework towards his County Coach certificate (I should point out this is a one-to-one thing and over/above general club coaching).
  2. I am considering going to an archery seminar/workshop organised by Simon and Lana Needham later this year, which I guess could be considered paid-for coaching of sorts.
Generally speaking, I'd certainly consider paying for coaching where I felt that I needed or would benefit from it. How much I'd be willing to pay would depend on the level of coaching and how much I felt I needed/wanted it!

HTH.

Yes, I'd quite happily pay for coaching. However:
- it'd have to be at a time to suit me
- it'd have to be done by someone I could respect
- there would have to be some sort of money-back guarantee
- it would have to be quantifiably better than what I currently get for free by reading the _right_ books/websites and talking to/getting help from archers that are better than me.

Personally, number 2 cuts the field a lot and number 4 is also where a lot of potentials would fall down. Leaves a very small pool that I'd be willing to throw some of the hard-earned at...

Oh, yes, I do NOT feel that anyone anywhere has any right to consider coaching a "free" thing that should be available to all. If you're lucky, it is. More likely, you're trying to sort things out on your own and occasionally bump into someone who gives you a serious shove along the path.

If all coaching was paid in some form I guess it would guarantee quality a bit more.

As for your four points, I think the danger with a coach adopting them is someone can just say 'I haven't gotten better' and demand the coaches wage back. It's so subjective. Also in the end there is only so much your coach can achieve in one day, some changes take time.
But in general, yes it is a good benchmark.
