When you were a beginner

I should have written this as a poll I suppose, but I don't know how.(SAD)
Before I started my beginners course I knew archery was for me. I bought one of the best bows around at that time, and the course was only half way through.
I wonder how many archers felt the same way. Did you know before the lessons started or did you grow to like it?

It was something I had hankered after for years, but there was so little information available as to where clubs actually met (this was before a lot of clubs became active on the internet remember), I never got round to searching for it seriously. I got seriously interested after watching a longbow shoot near Keilder Water in 2000, but only tried it out when a local Scout group got a shed load of cash from the Lottery and formed a little spin out club in the Scout hut (indoor only). Their have a go shoot was advertised in the local rag.

I discovered another little club not 2 miles from home by chance and took to it like a duck to water. Bought my first bow ( a Yamaha Alpha EX) from eBay within weeks. Never looked back since - it has become my life. I wish I had found a club all those years ago.

I thought it was pretty boring, then I began to pick it up quite quickly and do fairly well. I think I enjoy being competitive rather than a specific sport. Archery just happens to be the sport I fell into and do. I would have liked to have continued with the rowing but i was a good 6 inches too short and my back gave out. The nice thing about university is you can try lots of things you would never have thought of before and meet people with similar attitudes and ages. Thats why student archers is so much better than gnas archery.

what a great question!

Graham and I start our course tomorrow.. and I'm convinced it's for us! We wanted a hobby to do together. Had our first 'go' at archery about 6 years ago, but recently had another 'go' at a craft fair.. we'd both forgotten just how much we'd enjoyed it all those years ago.

Can't wait for the course to begin, but we've held back on buying.. although Graham nearly took a £300 gamble on a Hoyt package on ebay that was worth around £1000 according to the seller.. I stopped him due to size and weight of pull etc unknown.

tryed it years ago and fanced it but did not know how to get involved into archery back then .

Then one of my work mates started a beginners coarse and I signed up for the following one.

loved it and bought my first set up after 4 weeks ( against the advice of others I must say )

I started mid Feb. Bought a Yamaha bow off ebay after about 4 weeks. was gonna get some lower poundage limbs for it (ones that came with it were 42lb) until a nice chap at Aard decided to tell me they were none standard. so ended up buying my current bow which is a KAP surprise (26lb).

So by the end of my course I already had 2 bows.

Postman has just delivered my stabiliser so I'll be testing that out tonight.
With a bit of luck I might actually start hitting the target now.

(already looking out for my next bow)

Just read your post - did you resell your Yamaha in March this year on Ebay? Cos if you did I was probably the one that bought it!
