It's true to say that arrows are probably more important than any other piece of kit. For a Fita or york I would far sooner shoot Aces or X10's with a mid price set-up than the best bow in the world and jazz or xx75's. The problem with beginners is that most peolple are ready for heavyer limbs after six months or so and buying decent arrows now will mean they will have to be replaced with the change of limbs because arrows have to be spined to the draw weight. There are some things that are never a waste of money and can be moved from bow to bow such as a good quality sight and it is essential that you start to use a long rod ( on it's own or with v-bar and twins). I personally think it is a good idea to start with a clicker as soon as possible but only in conjunction with a coach or someone who really knows how to use one.

Practice, and coaching. Practicing mistakes will do you no good at all, so find a good coach and work with him/her. Once you cannot improve anymore with the kit you have, then you're ready to improve that. Most people's kit will shoot far higher scores than they can ever achieve. As for stabilisers, don't just follow the crowd, when you are ready for them experiment and find what suits you best. It isn't always the long-rod/v-bar set up that works. I have seen some weird set ups on the line, and they are usually in the hands of good archers.

I feel it is a steady progression along with good practice, arrows were the 1st thing that I upgraded on my beginner kit. The clicker and v-bar were the last!

Cheers all. I'll see if I can get someone who knows what they are talking about to checkout my arrows and see if there are any changes that can be made.

(And thanks for not pointing out that I said 'Eastman' rather than 'Easton' arrows )

Of course the only way to train them is to practice

Apart from properly spined arrows, and a decent setup:

Stay away from longrods as long as you can: they will mask mistakes you make, and make it more difficult to identify them. Shooting without them makes you much more aware of what you are doing and what needs to be improved.

The item most linked to progress are paper plates. Sounds stupid, I know, but I've seen to many beginning archers set up a fita target and go for the gold.. disregarding the "occasional" arrow in the 5 ring. And that arrow will later on cost you the match. Don't do that: practice to get consistancy in your groups: stick a paper plate on the boss and see if you can park 3 (or even better 6) arrows into the plate. If you can do that consistantly, take a smaller plate..

Or, if you get tired of the plates, carry a piece of string with you. Shoot 3 or more arrows, put the string around the group and mark or tie a knot where the ends meet. Great way to track your progress.

Great suggestions! I especially like the string thing, simple yet effective.

Check your equipment. You have to use what you have, so make sure it is in top quality condition. Tight, not loose, centre shot correct. Nocking point, limbs the right way round. Fletch damaged arrows.
