| I find scoring in practise helps me both at competitions, but also gives me a way of keeping track of how many arrows I'm shooting in practise

Within the bounds of Field, whilst you might shoot less arrows in a round than many of you are used to, that means that each miss is more costly - there's less chance to "make up the difference. For example: a 28 target Big Game round (2D animal faces, 2 scoring zones, maximum 3 arrows per target - 1st scoring arrow counts) has a maximum score of 560 (28 x 1st arrow kills, 20 points each) from between 28 and 84 arrows. Miss a target with all 3 and pulling that 20 points back is nigh-on impossible. Miss 2 or 3 and you're stuffed, especially if in the remainder there are a number of 3rd arrow wounds (10 points). It might well be fun to shoot, and "easy for a given definition of easy", but it's still a challenge. Quite a major one I'd suggest, especially where a course is designed to make best use of the terrain features. Likewise with EFAA classification. I shoot HS (Hunting Style) and to gain a "B" class I need to shoot over 200 (or 150, depending on what table you look at on the EFAA web-site.....) and over 300 for "A" class. This from a 28 target Field or Hunter course. (I'll leave the Field Master classes alone!) That's from 4 arrows per target, maximum score of 560 (20 points max per target) shot over distances from 10 to 80 yards over varying terrain (our 65 yarder has the first arrow shot from standing in a ditch!). Again, one or two duff targets and you're stuffed, there's little or no chance to recover. You have to be consistent! That's where the practice comes in, to get the consistency from different distances and different terrain conditions. Yes, Field is fun (as those of us who shoot it will constantly tell you ) but it's also very challenging!lol! Try it, you never know, you might even enjoy it!

| One night a week at the club pretty much limits me to preparation for weekend shoots. Hopefully, if things go well with the clubs future developments, there may be a chance to shoot target at weekends. I could spend more time at our field course, but these double rounds do tend to take up so much of your weekends. We'll have to arrange a date for the field course Kellog, possibly one saturday, as sundays are pretty much booked up with competitions, although the lull at the end of the outdoors and before the indoor gets into full flow is usually a good time. We could even turn it into an AIUK field tourney, NoCoFi? First rule of field, bring a flask. First rule of AIUK, bring cake. Mick

| In the main part of the outdoor season I score a round once a week - if I have no other competition that week that'll usually be a FITA 70m. I tend to get higher scores at practice (sheltered ground, I do not think I shoot any different) but it does give me some indictation of how things are and keeps me ready for my next competition. I use a timer to try and simulate comp conditions. Most of my arrows are not scored, I practice (consciously) specfic aspects of my shot. If I am thinking like this I do not get as good groups but it reminds me of what I am supposed to do should that aspect of my shooting go wrong in competition. I find it also stops my technique drifting so much over time. I have a tally counter so I know how many arrows I have done. Also when I score I try to keep to shooting 6 at a time, therefore if I scored all the time I would never get as many arrows done. I like fun shoots as much as the next person, maybe once a season or so. I am glad I am not at a club which insists I do rounds on their target days. |
