Ah, how could i forget america?! I was ofcourse refering to people in britain when i said that. Although having mentioned america, why do they use pounds to measure weight and not stone? Partial imperial measurement, now that's bizarre.....

(btw, scientist = can't spell )

Well, yes, but they use those funny size gallons and pints as well... If they were going to use Imperial measures they should at least have got it right...

Well, the Brits use miles for distance and Celsius for temps
I suppose you ought to stop selling pints in pubs if you're so metrically perfect over there.

Fully agree... get rid of the pint and sell beer in 568 ml measures...

On a slightly diferent topic but continuing the international theme. We (happy few) Brits whupped the French at Crecy, Agincourt and Poitiers mainly by the consumate skill of the longbow archers. So how come the international governing body of archery is written in French!!!

OH gawd this is my regular living nightmare............

I have A landrover defender 1989 (some metric some a/f and some imperial)

I also spanner for a my father in law on his classic racing motorcycles..........a 500cc manx norton (part a/f part imperial) When we have technical discussions he talks in thou's and 16th's and other junk which I have to try and follow.................searching for replacement locknuts and bolts for things is a nightmare for the metrically minded (IE ME!)

as an engineering student i use metric....unless im trying to buy something approximate or im talking to an older person e.g. "dad can you pass me a piece of wood?...about 9 inches long"

a couple of weeks ago i was fixing an old tractor using an imperial socket set...usually finding nut sizes by trial and error. when i came to put the sockets back in the box was the biggest problem: which is bigger, 3/8th or 7/32?

I think in lb's, inches and farenheit then have to mentally convert something in conform.

I can never remember the temperature conversion formula and people keep talking in celsius. Funny thing is, I do cold temps in celsius and hot ones in farenheit which gets VERY confusing. If someone says it's -10 outside, I know that's cold. If someone says it's 24, I'm "what's that in farenheit?"

What REALLY bugs me is lazy reciepe conversion. A an ounce is just over 28 grammes (I accept fractional grammes might be a bit much for reciepes) but most if not all reciepes that list both weights use a 1oz to 25g conversion.

That's fine to a degree, but I've seen reciepes where it gets rounded to the nearest neareast 25g so 4 oz becomes 100 g and 5 oz is 150g. That really bugs me
