I hope that the country becomes 100% metric soon and the oldies don't put up too much of a fight, if they do we will have to wait until they are retired.

I'm an "oldie" (to you, at least) and when I was at school, a maths teacher told us that decimal was for Neanderthals, as they could use their fingers and toes to count - "real" measurements required you to think ;-)

I'm not saying I totally subscribe to that rather extreme view, but how many youngsters do you see on a till who can work out your change in their head?

And beware of Grey Power - us oldies will force you to shoot Imperial! ;-)

Peace & Love,

Kev

RE: Units of Measure

I think SI#units should be fully adopted worldwide not just by post 1950 graduates

Modern science (except american engineers)#has chosen SI as best, science is progessive and has spoken. Its people who hand on to old traditions, in this case a British one, or was it? Didn't the Italian Romans give us the foot? So its not british at all really, I guess the British are not British either but a random mix of Europe left to mis for a few hundred years on an Island.

Jokes aside, I find Metric much simpler to use and less prone to making mistakes when making calculations. I think a simple number system is better, call me stoneage if u like... But I can say the same when u get into your mosern car and dont walk In life easy is usually always best.

RE: Units of Measure

Does it really matter??? Or is it just the men with the problem switching from one type to another, or was it the oldies. or maybe it is the yougsters??

lol

I'm 32 and fall somewhere in the middle as my parents / grandparents always use imperial and I was taught metric at school, having worked in retail at consumer shows - I can work out prices in my head as can I change yards into metres and vice versa.

Time for cake click please....

RE: Units of Measure

I don't think it really matters in archery. I like the idea of metric because its the international standard in archery. In the UK we have settled for slightly easier rounds. I think adopting the FITA round is the way to go. This seems to be happening as most big shoots these days are a FITA with or a 70m H2H. All rounds are good fun to shoot, and I think there is always room for Imperial rounds if people want to shoot them, however I feel the metric rounds are the best for the future devolopment and achievement within international#archery.

That's why computers use base 8 - so much easier to work things out in HEX ;-)

Joking aside, I do think the metric rounds are a better indication of accuracy, but that's all I'm going to concede ;-)

RE: Units of Measure

Base eight is Octal. as far as computers are concerned they will never be SI . As for Science most people never come into contact with it until it is appllied in the form of technology and so it remains the preserve of the few. Most people will grab a tape measure and if the measurement they want is 36 inches then they will say that it is 36 inches. If the measurement they want 20 cm then they will say 20cm . I am an engineer I have been known to ask for a 1/4" rod two cubits long before now but I got the right lenght of rod. Some things will not go metric the nautical mile will be with us for the forseeable future because it relates to an angular distance across the earths surface , and there are others.
