I have the Shurz a peep (Micro) as i dont use a d-loop and then a Arten Midas sight with a .75 (6x) lens fitted.
The micro does give problems in dim light so i do occasionally have to change to the next size up which does blur the target at a 100.
Only just dug it back out after winter hibernation.
And i want to get my York and FITA badges this year

Seeing it is not the problem. It's hitting the @+*&%y thing. Only joking 4/6 @ 70m last attempt, the 2 Reds nearly Red/Gold line cutters. I've kept the sight mark & quit whilst I was ahead

having just changed from a borrowed scope to start with, i'm now using a cartel scope. The borrowed scope was in focus at 90 & 70, the cartel one isn't. I thought I was gonna have to change the peep or something but after reading this thread i don't think i'll bother, reckon i'll stick with it and see how it goes.

The eye can only focus acutely at one distance, so if it is focusing on the dot/circle on the lens 30 inches (ish) away, the gold will be unfocused. Vice Versa applies. I was taught that switching focus between the two was bad. The opinion then was to focus on the lens ring, placing it around the gold.

As for clarity I seem to recall from physics lessons at school that a single lens only has one focal length, at which everything is in focus ?

Not as simple as that, when you look through a lense you do not focus on the lense itself, your eye will focus on the object that the lense is pointed at. As for the spot or circle That depends on what it is and where it is. If for example you have a coloured ring or spot on the front of the lense then the light from the target will hit the lense and the coloured ring. Light of the correct colour will pass through the ring and then be acted upon by the lense so the coloured ring will be same focus as the target because all the ring does is change the colour of light coming from the target.
As for the one focus distance, that is for light going through the lense and falling on a flat plane. The light coming through the scope goes to another lense in the eye.
Next there is the peep to consider some peeps are small enough to exhibit a 'Pin Hole lense' effect, so you effectively have two lenses in the system. And that is where my brain splutters to a stop so draw you own conclusions.

Rather belatedly, I am coming into this debate between two GMBs, one of whom has assisted me greatly with the choice of my current bow.

I have no idea what "punching" is but will be interested to learn.

Having just returned from JNOC with my protege I noticed that most of the guys were using Beiter 39mm scopes and, being a nosey parker, I established that they are using a 0.75 diopter (6X) magnification.

Please can you advise me whether or not this is a good choice of scope and magnification for all distances and why you take that view (or a contrary view)?

I notice that the Bowsports site adds the following detail in respect of the above scope: -

Frames for the BEITER Scope Ø39 are available as Kit, including 1 each of following frames in the ordered colour: Ø39/Ø34, Ø39/Ø30, Ø39/Ø26, Ø39/Ø24.

Sorry for seeming thick again but I've no idea what this means or what its significance is. Please can you enlighten?

I have the Beiter 39mm and I think you talked to me about it. (I was sitting on the red directors chair). The frames reduce the size of the scope, so if you cant see the outside ring of the scope through your peep, you can put a ring in to aid centering. My lens is 0.75D, because that is what it came with. I tried a 1.25D lens, and I could shoot with it, as 1 twitch meant moving across the whole target at 70m.
