Most clubs that run a shoot depend on the funds raised to keep the club going. The raffle provides the extras that make shooting all year at that club nicer. this in turn may keep the membership of the club up and helps the club survive. So if you want to come back and shoot next year perhapps you should support the raffle?

Marcus,
Aren't most of the costs of such an event there anyway, regardless of numbers?

I’m not a big fan of raffles either. The prizes are usually something that the club members have brought from home that they received as unwanted presents. They tend to go on for far too long, usually longer that the competition medal ceremony.

My club always runs a raffle, but we make far more money on food.

Its a fine line between the entries covering costs, and then there are the extras like food and other things which are helped on covering the cost by the raffle.

A £1.50 bacon roll isnt going to sell as well as a £1 one, but if some raffle money can be used to offset this 'loss' then all the better. If the prizes can be got at the right price then its a very good subsidy to put towards the next shoot.

Was the bottle "retired" (to the dustbin) after the third raffle? Or did it do the rounds again?

We made very little from the raffle we ran as part of our Centenary shoot back in July. In fact, if I'd claimed for the bottles of wine I'd bought, we would have made a loss.

Where we made the biggest comparative profit margin was on the catering. It helped that the weather was miserable.

Angry

I wish people would STOP ADVERTISING MY CAKE!

It's not that good, and i'm going to have to bake loads to meet the requirments of some of you archers (e.g. T J Mason, Morphymick etc.). You have to remember that cake isn't everything. In fact, cake is such a small part of our life, that we only eat it once or twice a year! Or once or twice a week, where the furface family are concerned.
So, please, take pity. There will be cake at my tournament (Lord patron, our very own T J Mason) but if I hear one more mention of it, I MIGHT TAKE THAT BACK!
