| good morning Thats a nice looking cocobolo and ebony bow. Elm vaneers? Looks like a black swan? As for making one look like that, well we have our own models. That grip is most like the rob roy. It has a less deep grip. The Reiver is a 1 peice version of the black douglas in terms of grip options. We can do the cocobolo, but the guys in the workshop complained of numb lips and nose when working with ebony, so thats no longer on our list of timbers. Even with face masks, extractors and the likes, and the stuff still gets to them. They refuse to use Bio hazard suits... so we are not going to push that one. They have to enjoy their work... The lines would be different, due to it being our model and not a copy of someone elses. As for the limbs. Carbon and glass in the nutral axis just adds weight. gives more hand shock and less joy to shoot, we dont see why any bowyer would make a bow that way. We have our own inhouse carbon layup for our bows, which is where the light limb mass and speed comes from. As for the mass of the bow. That depends greatly on the riser woods you want. For example zebrano is one of the lighter limbers and Heritage is one of the heavier. Heaver than cocobolo and ebony. We dont have a heritage bow that length in stock, so we cant weigh it for you. If you would like to know then we can sort that our when we have one... I can say a Xp30 64" all heritage is 1190grams. And the black series is lighter with the TX40 laminate, by about 40g in just the limb mass. A 58" would be lighter as each bow size has an optimised riser length. Your sitting around the 7grns /pound, and thats around the minimum for our bows. So thats ok by us. see the link below for more info. How to handle your bow I hope folks can add some Reivers or rob-roys. As the combinations are endless so we dont keep photos ourselfs. | |||||||||||||

| Thanks Thanks for all the info and your speedy reply. The bow pictured is a Tuktu from Caribow in Canada. I was looking for something in the wood design, not the bow design, but now that I know Ebony is out.....what color is the Heritage, and what would you accent it with...if anything? What lenght bow would you suggest given my draw lenght of 26.75". (I remeasured this morning, I must be growing.) I'm somewhat of a speed freak myself...sorry....thats what brought me to you, the few things I've read about Border Bows it that they're fast and stable. And by speed...I'm just hoping to get around 185 fps (52-54# bow). That's also why I was thinking the Black Reiver over the Super. Thanks again, George | |||||||||||

| George - the first few photos in this photoset are of a Black Reiver, made I believe with ebony. I believe that Sid will tell you they now use a black Heritage wood in its place, making the bow a little heavy, but I could be wrong. Border Bowfest 2006 - a photoset on Flickr | |||||||||||||

| A pleasure. Hope you enjoy it once you get it ![]() I can't have a Reiver, sadly. My draw length puts the longest Reiver - 64in - under too much stress. A shame, because I think the Black Reiver is the best looking traditional recurve I've ever seen. However, it does mean I have to get a Black Douglas if I am to won a traditional Border recurve... | Sorry for the delay. Internet issues Anyhow, Yes the BD is faster than the Reiver. It is our flag ship bow, and it all other bows get trickle down technology. The difference in both the standard and super in both the reiver and Black douglas ranges are based round the lines in the riser. The Super has a diverging strip though it, it is thin in the middle and thicker at both ends. The standard as a parrallel second timber running thought it. We dont see any reason at all why the reiver cant get those speeds Especially with light arrows. I will add a hole pile of extras in on this. Using a chrono that is not calibrated to anyone elses standards other than its factory setting. Using 4x 5inch feathers, on 9gpp arrows, from a 14 strand and string silencers, im shooting 196fps. form a 62" at 28", 62" Black douglas ultra. With Hex5-H black limbs. This is with a 28" draw. Long limbs on the shortest riser is not the fastest combo, but it works for me. But thats my set up with my chrono. Dont want to start a "my bow is faster than yours" In short, our bows are fast and stable. The TX40 is what been in the target limbs of ours. These stand up on there own in the middle of the worlds best limbs. This is in both the black reiver and the hex series limbs. Thanks for the photo post johnk, we should be more diligent. (anyone have more hours in the day spare) We are currently 4 guys down in the work shop due to illness and the likes. there is only 10 of us! i might be slow in responding to this for the foreseable future! I draw my Reiver out to 32" on the 64" standard model XP30 not CX and it copes fine I am sure you could draw one that extra half inch, performance wise peaking at @70# with a 32" 2317 Easton ally arrow weighing in at roughly 600 grains off the shelf with two string silencers and a brass nocking point measured in at 187fps! On this note I purchased my bow direct from Sid at border (I will post picks but have not taken any that do the bow the justice it deserves) it was an end of line bow off the web site at a bargain price, I called up Sid and had a long chat about the bow. Having only ever shot compound I did not have a clue and Sid answered some very silly questions that I had with a commendable level of professionalism and a supreme understanding of his products. The bow arrived a few days later boxed and in a lovely case with 18 big arrows they were quickly fletched and off we went, awful! A quick call to Sid wondering why it had all gone so wrong soon followed, again perfect customer service. Off again this time with the nocking point 1/2" inch high and........ wow suffice to say the compound is sitting in its case gathering dust and the Reiver is providing hours of enjoyment, my shooting has improved and for the first time I am happy with my equipment and how well I am doing! If only I could afford the same bow in custom wood and the black version, oh well. Thanks to all at Border for my bow! | |||||||||||
