First String

OK OK, so maybe it's not that exciting to the masses, but to me.....

Today I succesfully made my own bowstring from 18 strands of Angel string material (blue) with Black serving

Spent the next few hours setting up the bracing height, nocking point and tuning the pressure button etc.

I am so pleased with myself I just had to post

For those of you with a more serious disposition, I hope I have kept this thread short enough not to have wasted too many minutes of your life

Congratulations! I remember how happy I was when I first made my own string (I think it took about 3 attempts at it though!) try and practice making them if you can - like the rest of archery the more practice you do the better string you will make.

Though Ive been making endless loops for years and teach classes how to make strings, I made my first flemish braid string recently for my recurve. This was out of necessity as I lent the string I was shooting with to a fellow archer so he could try out some 70" limbs. I told him he could borrow my string for as long as he wanted, I would just make another. then I realised the string jig was also out on loan. So I thought i'd have a go at a flemish braid. I had a look on the internet for some instructions, made myself a flemish braid jig and voila a double ended flemish braid 18 strands fastflight. Well, actually it was v-v-voila as the first two attempts I underestimated the shortening effect of the twisting.

I did my first about 18 months ago (with the help of my dad). It was a complete disaster and the loops began to come apart after about 3 uses. I've since made another, but no longer use it since I could just get some custom made ones from Stu. They look dynamite with my matrix.

Shot the American round for the VGP yesterday evening with my new string - so far so good!

The black serving leaves me looking like I've run my fingers through a newpaper printing press tho

Making your own strings is like being given a power that allows you to be independent. Go for it. Make another so you have two shot in at all times.

Well done G.D. I made my first string in 1989 and was taught by Sue Williamson, if she was the same person that taught you, you wont go far wrong.

It was Sue who showed me the ropes and she does make it look very easy.

This was my first "flying solo", without anyone looking over my shoulder after two previous (supervised) attempts that were of mixed success
