.... Bows I'm specifically looking at are a Hoyt Ultratec 2004 with 50-60lb limbs in fade blue, or a Hoyt Protec 2005 with 50-60lb limbs in black marble. Thoughts?
Either bow is very capable of very high scores. It seems just now that there is a trend for bows to look all sexy and fast, people get obsessed with speed. I feel the Hoyt range of bows is reliable and a safe bet. Ok the Bowtech style bow is fast, but I also hear they eat bow strings and bits can fail. I have yet to hear anyone slag off a Hoyt. A very good archer can make a fast bow sing, I'm average and feel safer shooting a medium to fast bow. A super quick bowtech would be a mistake for the likes of me who is not totally consistant with form. Buy either of the two Hoyts, both will serve you well. The protec will be a little bit faster, but I doubt you will notice the difference. Between the two bows I would base my choice on price and condition.

From what I'm told, the Ultratec is in mint condition and fitted with D75 cables and string. It comes in at £300 while the Protec (similar condition) comes in at £450 - not sure its worth £150 extra!

i changed from recurve to compund at the start of the indoor season and i love it i bought a bowtech diamond. its 1 of the cheapest compound bows on the market however it is very efficiant and very smooth. a lot of people have commented on how quiet it is. for the start of the outdoor season i have plans to wind up the poundage to 46lbs it is only set at 42 now as i was used to shooting a 34lbs recurve. i loved recurve but i would never go back compound is great.

Save some money for some new 452X strings and cables (Winners Choice is the best here) and throw those crap D75 strings in the bin.
Honestly the worst string material for compound bows, OK on recurve though.

Don't have a bowpress or any string making expertise, anyone know someone in the UK who's not too expensive, makes good quality strings with decent material, and knows what they're doing with a bowpress?
