Is it ok to install a peep without a bow press?

I would say it can be done, but.... not very easy to do properly. The problem I had was, getting the string separated into two bunches of complete strands.
I have tried, using a blunt wedge. The tendency was for one or more of the strands to end up split, with some fibres either side of the wedge. Perhaps I just used the wrong shaped wedge. There is probably a simpler and more effective way, and I will be all ears when that is posted.

Umm... tried and done it after i dry fired (arrow fell off rest) once. Used 2 feeler blades to space it then two thin metal PDA pens to make the gap and then push it into place.

Not an easy job and would wait untill i got home/ to bowshop before attempting it again, and if youre not carefull you will end up splitting strands as geoff said.

Yes there are tools. One is described as a string separator that can also be used for counting the strands. Looks like a pencil crossed with a lace maker's bobbin. There is no mention of how to use- with or without a bowpress.

I think I recently saw a new tool by beiter it looks like a miniture plastic roman sword that slots into the strings, not sure if its meant to be used with or without a bow press but since no tools are required if you have a bow press, I assume its intended to be used without one! I only saw it last week, but now can't find where!

Not really. You need to know how many strands are on either side of the peep and preferably know 'true' centre.

If you insist on trying, use a pair of Beiter peep tools and only then if the string is loose enough to take it. I am aware of one gentleman using a pair of scissors in place of a peep tool... the results were rather predictable

Get it done with a bowpress.
Even if you manage to get th peep into the string without cutting a strand you will still have to get it to rotate properly.
This means a press to allow you to put a turn on the string at the cam end.
There are methods involving drawing the bow and locking the cams with metal rods.
This is not recommended!!
Take it to a shop and get it done properly and safely.

try a couple of biro pen tops, smooth and no sharp edges, as long as you have something to support the bow,or someone to hold it, this do works as i have seen a couple of members use this technique quite often,

Two ball point pens. Easy peasy!!
