Customising ITS springs

This might be interesting for some of you:

I have been shooting a Target 3+ with the 95# spring for about a year, but recently became more and more aware of the fact I really could use a stiffer spring to pre-load the trigger more confidently.

Alas, the 135# spring was all but impossible to fire. So I E-mailed Carter to ask whether there was an in-between weight spring available. Mr Forrest Carter replied with a surprisingly simple solution: Cut off 1/16" of the 135# spring. I used a dremel to carefully cut a bit off, and it worked out exacty the way I wanted.

I just thought I'd share this for anyone with the same problem!

Nice one! Can I ask, did you try to square the cut end after the shortening process? Just wondering if, in some circumstances, the spring might tend to lean over rather than staying square to the surface it contacts.

Geoff, I just carefully ran the dremel disc along the underside of the cut to chamfer it a bit so as to square the coil, but for a different reason. My worry was that the sharp cut would damage the insides of the release.

The reason you state is a very valid one though, and I am glad I did it all the more

How do you tell the difference between the springs? My highly technical way of checking things is to compress them between my thumb and forefinger to see which is more or less compressible?

One way to compare a set is to put two, end to end and press the outer ends. The weaker one will compress more. That won't tell you its rating but it will indicate which, from the set,to try next.

Cheers Geoff - I think that's sort of what I've ended up doing by default.
