Question Why is my scope always left?

I always wonder why my scope ends up being a bit to the left of the bowstring line. I don't believe I torque the bow unduly when I shoot so don't think it's that (although I suppose I can't rule it out). Maybe it's down to the effect of the cable guard in some way. OR... perhaps because the bow string on most compounds is slightly off-centre, while the pressure point on the grip IS in the centre line, therefore (it seems to me) the string will not be drawn back quite parallel to the "line" of the bow (hope I'm explaining this OK...). OR perhaps something to do with arrow spine... I have even seen it on a bow set up with a split-cable system, so maybe its not down to the cable-guard after all.

Also most, if not all, of the compounds I've seen over the years seem to be set up in a similar way, i.e. with the sight out to the left a bit (for a right-handed bow). I've learnt to expect this now, and it doesn't seem to be a problem regarding scores/arrow-flight/tuning but I must say I'm still perplexed and curious about it. Does anyone have any ideas?

mmm . . . I see what you're thinking. Having shot recurve for many years its not something I found at all odd on a compound - its certainly better than the scope being on the right of the bow string - except if you're left handed.

Mine is also a little to the left, and I don't believe I have a bow hand torque problem.

It would be interesting if this is also the case on Archer-Mum's Hooter Shooter.

Okay I'll admit I have never seen a Hooter Shooter, but surely they don't aim!?! So how can you tell if it is to the left or not for the Hooter Shooter?

Cheers mk1, I too shot recurve and of course it's expected there, but why on a compound? Thanks for confirming my findings though, hoping to get some answers to this one...

i'd be very interested in seeing one of these hooter shooter thingamy's.

how can they replicate an archer. what do they do .... can you only shoot one arrow at a time ,because the second one in theory should go straight down the back of the first. weather you bow is spot on or not

please reply if you can answer

For a moment I was worried...

then again, my scope is off to the right of the string, the arrow points off to the left, I suspect that there's something wrong somewhere, but I could be wrong.

Cheers also Fugue and GeoffT, this does seem to be the norm as it were... I have the feeling that if I understood this one I would have learnt something very useful. As regards the Hooter Shooter, I guess if you can still look through the peep and line up the sight then you could confirm the need (or not) for the left alignment, and definately eliminate bow-torque as a factor. Maybe WatchMan or ArcheryMum will be able to tell us.

Bimble, are you shooting left-handed? In which case you would be experiencing the same effect as me, if I look down at my arrow before I shoot it points slightly to the right (makes sense if the scope is to the left). But for whatever reason, the arrows (the good ones anyway!) still go straight.

Pete, If I were you I would buy the Summer issue of the Glade. Archer Mum has written an excellent piece about the Hooter Shooter (with pictures just for you).
