Oops!

Failed to notice that you posted this in the compound section!! That said, most of my earlier comments still apply. It takes a long time to develop a truly repeatable form, even with compound.

No, you don;t have the draw length issues, but there's plenty of other stuff to mess with your form instead: bow hand position and pressure; bow lean; draw-hand position/anchor; pressure into the wall/valley; release technique; follow-through etc etc.

As you shoot more, your form WILL settle down and your results WILL improve.

Adam

techniques settling

I just read the forum on consistency and it has to be truthful put alot of my concerns to bed!
I am a new archer ...since june this year and have really found it frustrating to find that i can be as good on one day as i can be as bad on another!
Im reading alot and finding new things to pick up on and concentrate on so thanks to you all for the insights!

I ve been shooting since 2005 shot recurve for 2.5 yrs and it really bugged me how inconsistant my shooting was. Managed to shoot a couple of 540 portsmouths in competition.

Then due to injury i had to have 4-5 months off and was unable to shoot recurve. I sold all my recurve stuff and bought a compound and within 1 month i was shooting 560s portsmouths. after a really good outdoor season im now hoping to break the 575 580 mark this indoor season. Big ambitions but with a positive mental attitude BRING IT ON

Compound for me is far more consistant and you can improve much quicker!

No I mean improve. Maybe because i enjoy shooting compound more as well and i have no pain in my arm when i shoot compared to recurve.

Been shooting from November 2007 and I have recently noticed a huge improvement by changing how I practice. Instead of "hunting the 10" all the time I read as much as I could about archery. Simon Needham's "The art of repetition", "Steps to Success", Simon's DVD etc. were all great. Don't be afraid to ask for help from more experienced people in your club.

I did a 2 day course with Larry Wise in August and although some stuff didn't work for me, the rest of it was really informative and put me on the right track. His book, "shooting with back tension" is a cheap and worthwhile read. I found that due to my size, a longer draw length he promotes wasn't great for my style (recurve) but the compound archers at the club swear by it now.

He did encourage me to get a notebook and write down:

Date, Bow, and "what I intended to concentrate on" e.g. bow hand. The strangest part for me as a newbie and the bit that worked was shooting practice arrows at a blank bale. I laughed this off at first but I was so wrong. The 20 arrows I shoot at the blank bale concentrates my form. I'm not worried about hitting gold and as a result I tend to do things right. When I get a target in front of me, I can fall to pieces again while concentrating on my aim------>then it's back to the blank bale again for a few more practice shots.

My new practice now consists of about 3 doz. arrows at the BB then 2 doz. at a target. I then identify any problems and shoot another few scoring ends. I take note of everything and finish of with 2 doz. arrows at BB to reinforce what I am trying to achieve.

As I've said before, I'm a newbie and I'm sure the guys on here may know better (if they do please say as I am like an annoying "sponge" for archery do's and don't's), but I have improved my FITA 18m from 479 to 507 and I shot 557 Portsmouth in the club last week (only 536 tonight though Grrr!, chatting too much).

Hope this helps and I am not steering you in the wrong direction.

P.S. Send me yer address and I will happily post you over a couple of books if you remember to send them back again---->this is important as i am like the HULK when it comes to my books
