| Some interesting points there, all good. I came into archery fairly late in life, I used to swim a lot, up to 5 miles a day (This was for a back problem) with breast stroke as my main style, I developed good shoulder strength, not that I have a Mr Universe set of shoulders...far from it. But I found that by swimming, the shoulders will develope as you want them to, & these are the same set of muscles I use to shoot with. Perhaps others may not agree, but that's my way.

Clubs should band together and build themselves indoor ranges. Our club built a 18m range and have blossomed due to it. Get a couple of clubs in a district to pool their resourses and it could happen.

We tried that, planning permision was refused, due to the fact that we are on a flood plane. No, they would not let us build on stilts either

| This is a good exercise Using a light weight in each hand stand with your arms at your side - Raise you arms to eye level and hold for a count of 3 - Now turn your hand so they face forward and again hold for a count of 3 - Now bring you your hands together in front of you and hold for a count of 3 - Now turn your hands so there facing downward and hold for a count of 3 - Now lower your arms so that they are resting on the front of your thighs and hold for a count of 3 - Now raise your arms in front of you till there again at eye level and hold for a count of 3 - Now turn your hands so that the palms are facing each other and hold for a count of 3 - Now bring your arms out until your in the crucifix position hold for a count of 3 - Now turn your hands until they’re facing downwards and again hold for a count of 3 - Finally lower your arms to the starting position That counts as one rep keep the weights used very light and go for more reps and not heavier weights

| training hi zanda, you could try a rubber exercise band knotted at the ends. you can then mimic the pulling action you would normally use. it is a good way to warm up as well b4 u shoot. it worked for me until i had built up ''muscle'' but with practice it will come. sweetpea ![]()

| I often have LONG breaks from shooting, and when I want to get back into shape for a big competition I train with a recurve in the front room at home. Fit a D-loop so you can use the release. Keep the bow arm bent. A bent arm works the bow arm muscles much harder. Draw and hold the recurve for as long as possible while keeping good technique. (Good discipline needed there.) Let down. Repeat. This is best for me because it works exactly the muscles I need to strengthen. I’ve tried weights but never really feel I’m hitting the right spots. For archery specific muscles this seems to give me the most improvement. I work hard at this for approx 1 month. Almost every night, I would do this until I couldn’t draw the string again. After the first couple of evenings I’m pretty sore the next day, but aching in all the right places, if you know what I mean. After a while I recover well enough during the night to have a good practice session the next day. Then I go back onto the exercises in the evening. |

| Larry Wise suggests some simple arm exercises in 'Core Archery'. Just using a walking stick or a dead branch you can do them while out for a walk and don't need any equipment to practise them.......though you might end up looking a bit of a pilchard if you're not carefull ![]() |

| Hmm. Clicked on this thread to make the response I've been meaning to for a couple of days. It's going to look like I felt my gills burning ![]() Anyway, as the recipient of several expensively treated fin injuries, the one piece of advice that has stuck most is don't forget the rotator cuff |
