I like the idea of a strip of aluminium foil down the inside of the arrow.

It's a problem because no-one has the time to stop and dig out every beep on the MD. The standard pattern is: MD beeps, run it forwards/backwards a bit to see if you have a line registering. If it's just a small area, leave it. Typically you get lots of single point detections, especially on playing fields (lost studs). I wouldn't attempt to find an all carbon (or wood) shaft with an MD, you're better off with a rake.

One particularly irritating false reading we had on our field looked just like an arrow, until we finally got fed up and dug up an old iron fence railing which must have been buried for years.

Other "finds"; part of an old cricket trophy, a dud .45 pistol bullet (WWII vintage), a 9 carat gold wedding ring (buried a good 6 inches down, must have been there for years), lots of bits of tinfoil (sweet wrappers, cigarette wrappers).

hi paul dont make the mistake of thinking that the "metal" tip as you call it is guarter of an inch long its nearer 1 and a half inch and its quitye a dense metal at that, so yes a metal detector should pick it uup

I was not sure how big it was but it is still a lot less than a whole arrow, our metal detector at the club is fairly basic and would have a problem with a tip on its own if it was buried more than a few inches. I still have an alloy arrow out there somewhere but it is our own field so its sort of OK still bugs me I lost it had an left eye dominance moment but shot anyway

I was tempted to buy a set of these for field shoots, a lot cheaper than losing or destroying a cartel triple (they make a nice mess when they hit a tree!!)
Has any one tried them yet ? They look good for field shooting at that price.

If you must use all-carbon arrows, cut a 4-inch square of aluminium foil, roll it up and shove it down the back of the shaft. It weighs so little it will have no effect on the matching of the arrows, but shows up clear as a bell with a metal detector.

I shot all carbon arrows for a number of years (a couple of different Easton types, and Carbontechs) without any problems. I also managed to lose a Carbon/Aluminium shaft, on a field which is generally okay for finding things with a metal detector. The key point is that it's normally easy to find any arrow which fetches up more or less where you expect it to be, but it's always difficult to find an arrow which heads off into the blue yonder.
I don't see carbon shafts as being a problem when shot by someone who's mostly hitting the target!

There are exceptions...

At the end of the last outdoor season, I decided to get sight marks for 20 yards for the indoor season. We'd set aside a boss for beginners, and this was at 20 yards. So I shot and hit dead centre. And got a pass-through. And spent the next 30 minutes looking for the varmint.
