New Bow

Hi,
I just got a new compound bow because I wanted to learn how to shoot it and get a more hands on feel for the technical side of the comppound bow itself.
I got two different release aids with the bow and had a go with them last Saturday ..... managed to hit myself in the jaw as the release aid clamp came off the D during the draw. Did this twice nearly knocking myself out before deciding to just shoot off the fingers.I had just shot an Albion prior to picking up the compound and figure I was either tired or just doing something wrong.
So besides shooting off the fingers what kind of release aid would you suggest a beginner compound archer try and should I change the way my hand moves when I draw the bow.... I was looking at pictures of compound archers at full draw and there does appear to be some diferent holding styles .... is that dwn to type of release aid.

I will be going to have a compound session Tuesday week ( after the intercounty shoot) and don't really want to be knocking myself out again.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sandra

for starters i would not use a release with clamps that hold the loop !! i just dont trust them that much !!
second u must choose what kind of release you want to shoot ! wrist type release , or hand held , or a backtension type release ??
ther are so many different type,s so its really hard to choose from !
and about the position at your face it should practicly the same with any release ( the position of the peep at your scope i mean with this ) !

I use a Tru-ball accu touch as it has a positive lock onto the string and providing you keep your finger away from the trigger during the draw there is no chance of an accidental release.

I understand the concept of the back tension release but what is the difference between the handheld and the wrist type ?

What have you got?

A wrist release is attached to a sling that goes around your wrist. As for shooting a compound off fingers, it depends on what bow you have, there are some compounds that are suited to shooting off fingers. These bows will generally have a longer axle to axle (A to A) lenght and you will need a flipper rest and button fitted to the bow rather than a launcher. It would be a help if you were to tell us what type of bow you have, the A to A, your draw lenght what arrows you are shooting off it etc.

My bow (as per the Ebay description)

Merlin Hunters Quest Compound Bow - with Pro-Fusion Carbon Limbs.
Omega No2 OM5 Cams, Axle length 35", peak weight 40lb.
Spigarelli Arcosport Super Rest.
Beiter 30" Centraliser Stabiliser inc end weight (but not using this just yet)
Toxonics Compound Sight with Beiter 29mm Scope inc 0.5 dioptre lens, weathershield, bubble and shelf, spare pins and rings Plus spare Las Vegas 0.5 scope.
13 fletched Easton Platinum XX75 1816 Arrows (not measured exactly yet but about 27inch)
Trufire Magnum Release Aid and 2Ray Wrist release, Bowsling.

I tried with the Trufire Magnum release aid as I could not figure the wrist release and it was a bit big for me.

You dont mention if the bow is set at its peak draw weight, but if it is then the XX75 arrows seam somewhat underspined for the bow. This is working from the Easton guide - 40#, 27" draw, 100 grain point weight, release aid used.

I was trying to work this out yesterday, based on my limited knowledge of compound bows, my Larry wise book and the GNAS coach handbook I think it is currently set with the maximum axle -axel length. If I shorten the draw length does the peak weight increase ?

I will double check the arrrow length tonight.

Thanks
Sandra

If you change the module (I believe that these have interchnagable draw length modules - probably 3 per cam size, similar to the XT) then your poundage will alter slightly. Just weigh the bow before making the changes and then again after. You can then adjust the limb bolts in or out to get back to the poundage you want. Tinkering with cable lengths will also have a bit of effect too but you need to watch your cam timiming if you do this.

If you speak to Ben or Chris Jones of Merlin (Ben posts on here) they'll set you straight and let you know if they can still supply draw length modules. They are very helpful
