RE: Is compound Archery more Technical

Best training aid in the world to keep your front arm from overextending Jerry

And I must admit, I only hit my arm maybe twice a year..

How do you over extend? If you rotate the arm corectly then it has not choice but to be straight.
Bending teh arm can cause tendonitis in the elbow joint if you use the release correctly.

Ok, two things...

I don't use my release correctly. It's one of my major problems. But no tendonitus

I shoot with a relaxed arm, it's not exactly bent, but if I push too hard into the handle of my bow then my elbow sticks inwards.

Maybe I'm just built funny?

no such thing, it's simply about getting teh biomechanics right, which is sometimes easier said than done.

We should do some threads on good compound form, I'll get some pictures and start it off in the next few days.

Hyper extension of the left elbow is a problem that affects quite a few archers and if you have it you do need to be a little more careful.

RE: Is compound Archery more Technical

hyperextension is a result of poor elbow positioning.
Many compound archers have their elbows turned so that if they bend their arm it bends upwards.
Recurve archers rotate their arm so it bends to the right,
The way recurve archers do it is better and stronger and also avoids hyperextension, something that is never an issue with top recurve archers.
With compound you can often 'get away with' the elbow bending upwards, but it is not the strongest position.

RE: Is compound Archery more Technical

Ok - I had a good look at my elbow this weekend, and there is no physical way I can hold the bow to make it bend upwards, short of breaking my wrist and resetting it. And even at its most "turned out" point, I still have a lumpy bit that sticks inwards.

I told you that I was made funny! Or it could be that I have fat arms... this is a possibility.

Anyhooooo - it isn't affecting my shooting, which is improving lots, so I'm refusing to worry about it

Can you post a picture? Helps get an idea what you are referring to. We may be discussing the same thing.

RE: Is compound Archery more Technical

I think we are, looking at the picture you've posted up there..

My compound problems are more down to aiming/releasing than actually holding the bow.

Would like to be able to shoot your scores though!

Furface - 6/10/2005 10:54 AM Different bow types, different technicalities. If you want a really technical discussion, try talking to longbowmen about their arrows, or wood types. But what draws you to compound? Without wishing to sound patronising, I have seen many take the style up because it gives higher scores, just as they go to longbow to give an excuse for missing. Each type requires as much, if different, skills, physical and mental. I would say, as with everything, give it a try, borrow a bow and shoot. No amount of advice can beat actually having a bash - before you buy all the equipment! Though I must say those Oneida bows look really "dark"!
</p>

Technicalities do not bother me, bent stick &amp; string, CNC Riser &amp; carbon limbs (Bent at the ends),that can be taken off the riser, magnetic rests, etc.etc. More than one string on the bow with peep-sight at the eye end &amp; a magnifying#glass at the other, launcher, a trigger to &quot;Shoot&quot; with not to mention the funny wheels on the beast. Yup! Archery is getting to be technical, but it is still fun. I shoot all 3 types, they each have their own requirements, &amp; each one is a challenge. It is the challenge I enjoy. </p>
