Draw weight

Hi folks. I've been messing around with a compound for a while now, shooting the occasional field course & I'm considering taking it up, more full time (so to speak) My problem is the draw weight. I'm quite prepared to sell me '05 Ultratec to go to a lower weight as I'm currently shooting 70# BUT what would be the best weight to go for, for target shooting? I mainly shoot 20m indoors, 30, 50 & 60 outdoors.
I only ask, because I can't pull my arrows out of the target using this weight!!!

Don't shoot a compound myself but if you shoot GNAS target I believe your bow must be set at under 60lbs.

Yes GNAS/FITA limit is 60lbs. If you dont fancy wrenching your arm each time yo remove arrow from target then try 55 or even 50. Unless you do fitas the weight doesnt really matter.

I can hit 90M with 53# at 26" draw so for me there is no need to go heavier.

Your issue may not be related to poundage alone, I assume you are shooting carbons into straw? Even Ali's can be a problem with some straw bosses, I suggest you lube your arrows a bit, there have been several posts about this but I used to use an old shoe sponge soaked in Silicone spray and wipe the first few inches of arrow every couple of ends, there are specific canisters and lube you can buy for this purpose if you want to spend a couple of pounds, it really does help, especially if you are shooting higher poundage.

Higher poundage

Higher poundage just gives a flatter tragectory at longer distance, but as for poundage my daughter can shoot at 80 yds with a 30lb bow with 26" ACC arrows

I shoot ace's with a 56lb bow 28".

Shoot what is comfortable and set the sight accordingly

go for a maximum draw weight of 60llb's then you can drop it down by 10llb's to 50, or anywhere in between to comply with GNAS/FITA
I shoot at 56 llb's and still have problems pulling the arrows out. A bit of lube helps, and a couple of mates (archers) not the rubber kind (if you get my drift) to give you a hand to pull.
the smell of burning straw on your arrow is always good!!!

Hi all,
I shoot 51 lbs at @ 30" Draw, and I have no problems with max distance - In fact, indoors I've had to switch to big Ali Arrows, not for the line cutters but because I was getting pass throughs and destroyed fletchings at 20 yds - could be soft bosses as well, but got fed up of refletching all the time!

Graham.

got to be soft bosses! on ours I get about a 5" to 6" penetration and the arrows often need two people to pull them out, some times 3. In fact I have never had an arrow go to the fletch indoors, and my bow shoots at 265 foot per sec.
