| It's usually 7 inches for finger shooters. Most release-shot compounds I've seen also use this length, though I've never understood why - surely it's only needed around the nocking area? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Serving is usually long enough to cover your arm as well so that if it catches arm/arm guard it catches the serving rather than the string. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I think there is no right/wrong answer to this as it isn't a necessity. It's a convenient way of wrapping the separate strands and protecting the string all in one hit. Too much depends on how fast you want the bow to be, as every inch will slow the bow a little. For tuning purposes you could have too much, for example, if the arrows were shooting stiff. Too little is far more serious as there will probably be insufficient grip on the string to keep itself in place for nocking purposes. Some threads do not grip very well and some strings make matters worse. Enough to stay in place depends on the serving thread and the bowstring material. As a rough guide 6or 7 inches should work in most cases. Less than that and I would keep an eye on the nocking point to check it isn't rising up the string. |

| i make my own strings and generaly serve about and inch above top finger and 2 inches below botton gives me just about 5 inches in total. seems to worl and looks good too. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| I seem to remember reading somewhere that it has to be long enough that the end of it can't be used as a crude rear sight! |

| Yeah but your not allowed one on recurve normally, that included using the top of the serving as one. |

| I usally put 5" on a compound bow and 6-7 on recurve, if you are hitting your arm there's something wrong with your technique |
